Designed as the lexical companion to Wikipedia, the encyclopaedia project, Wiktionary has grown beyond a standard dictionary and now includes a thesaurus, a rhyme guide, phrase books, language statistics and extensive appendices. We aim to include not only the definition of a word, but also enough information to really understand it. Thus etymologies, pronunciations, sample quotations, synonyms, antonyms and translations are included. Wiktionary is a wiki, which means that you can edit it, and all the content is dual-licensed under both the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License as well as the GNU Free Documentation License. Extrasensory perception (ESP) involves reception of information not gained through the recognized senses and not internally originated. The term was coined by German psychical researcher, Rudolf Tischner, and adopted by Duke University psychologist J. B. Rhine to denote psychic abilities such as telepathy and clairvoyance, and their trans-temporal operation as precognition or retrocognition. ESP is also sometimes casually referred to as a sixth sense, gut instinct or hunch. The term implies acquisition of information by means external to the basic limiting assumptions of science, such as that organisms can only receive information from the past to the present. Parapsychology is the study of paranormal psychic phenomena, including ESP. Parapsychologists generally regard such tests as the ganzfeld experiment as providing compelling evidence for the existence of ESP. The scientific community does not accept this due to the disputed evidence base, the lack of a theory which would explain ESP, and the lack of experimental techniques which can provide reliably positive results. I don't think the tests that have been done proved anything more than luck. There's no solid proof that any of that exists as far as I know. Maybe your friend should subject himself to tests? Answered by WannaBeMom - Tue Apr 25 21:20:29 2006 Can science explain ESP(Extra Sensory Perception)?
Q. I just feel that science has its limitations in this field. Scientific theory rely on the principle called "Principle of Local Causes", that is events that occur in one place of the universe cannot influence events in another place of the universe unless there is an energy link established between them. How does it help to explain super-natural phenomena like Telepathy, Clairvoyance and Precognition. Asked by dendroaspis polylepis - Sun Dec 28 09:49:17 2008 - - 12 Answers - 0 Comments A. Panku, if you are going to quote wiki you should reference it. When science can measure ESP occurring in a controlled environment, which has not yet been done then I'm sure an explanation will be sought. Until then it is all better explained by imagination, confirmation bias and cold reading. Answered by Tukmyhamster - Sun Dec 28 10:07:30 2008 From Yahoo Answer Search: "extra-sensory perception" |
