Scientific method refers to a body of techniques for investigating phenomena, acquiring new knowledge, or correcting and integrating previous knowledge. To be termed scientific, a method of inquiry must be based on gathering observable, empirical and measurable evidence subject to specific principles of reasoning. A scientific method consists of the collection of data through observation and experimentation, and the formulation and testing of hypotheses.

Although procedures vary from one field of inquiry to another, identifiable features distinguish scientific inquiry from other methodologies of knowledge. Scientific researchers propose hypotheses as explanations of phenomena, and design experimental studies to test these hypotheses. These steps must be repeatable in order to dependably predict any future results. Theories that encompass wider domains of inquiry may bind many independently-derived hypotheses together in a coherent, supportive structure. This in turn may help form new hypotheses or place groups of hypotheses into context.

Among other facets shared by the various fields of inquiry is the conviction that the process must be objective to reduce biased interpretations of the results. Another basic expectation is to document, archive and share all data and methodology so they are available for careful scrutiny by other scientists, thereby allowing other researchers the opportunity to verify results by attempting to reproduce them. This practice, called full disclosure, also allows statistical measures of the reliability of these data to be established.

How can I use the scientific method to make cotton candy in a Science Fair?
Q. We have a science fair coming up and we need to use the scientific method in our project. My group wanted to make cotton candy so it would be a popular project. Have any ideas how to make it and how we can use the scientific method as well? Thanks for all the answers!

A. The scientific method is a process for testing ideas: 1) Ask a question 2) Do background research 3) Create a hypothesis 4) Design an experiment to test the hypothesis 5) Analyze the data you've collected and draw a conclusion 6) Communicate your results. What are you testing by creating cotton candy? What you could do is you could test something using cotton candy. You could start by asking the question, "Does everyone like cotton candy?" You could then do research on cotton candy, how the human tongue tastes things, and about why people have different opinions on the same things. From your research, you could create a hypothesis. An example could be "If I increase the sugar content of cotton candy, more people will like it." Then… [cont.]

A. I think that it's pretty much that he was the first to use the method in his science (or at least, he defined it better). He relied on observation and data collecting in order to make conclusions. pg 150: Scroll down to "Mathematics and natural science": pg 136:

What is the concept of plate tectonics in terms of the scientific method?

A. Plate tectonics (from the Greek word for "one who constructs and destroys", , tekt n) is a theory of geology developed to explain the phenomenon of continental drift and is currently the theory accepted by the vast majority of scientists working in this area. In the theory of plate tectonics the outermost part of the Earth's interior is made up of two layers: the lithosphere comprising the crust and the solidified uppermost part of the mantle. Below the lithosphere lies the asthenosphere which comprises the inner viscous part of the mantle. The mantle behaves like a superheated and extremely viscous liquid.
